Emberfall Chronicles
Emberfall Chronicles is the kind of RPG I used to think only existed on handhelds. You build a party of four, explore a hand-drawn world, and fight through turn-based battles where positioning and timing genuinely matter. The story is told through small vignettes between towns, and the writing has real personality.
The battle system clicked for me around the second dungeon. Each character has a stamina meter that fills over turns, so you're constantly deciding whether to spend a small action now or save up for something bigger. Managing cooldowns while juggling the enemy's weaknesses gives fights a puzzle-like rhythm.
Best part: it's entirely offline. There's a chunky initial download, but after that you never need a connection. I played through two whole chapters on a camping trip and the only limit was my battery.
What we liked
- Deep turn-based combat with stamina timing
- A warm, well-written main story
- Big content that runs with no connection
