Five Offline RPGs Built for the Commute
The best thing about a good offline RPG is that it respects your time and your data plan. No handshake with a server every three seconds, no "reconnecting" spinner when you go into a tunnel.
Emberfall Chronicles is my current favorite in this category. The stamina-based turn system means battles ask you to think a few moves ahead, and the story keeps pulling you to the next town. I played two full chapters on a weekend away from signal.
What I look for in a commute RPG is a solid save system and quick resume. If I can open the game, play one fight, and close it before my stop, it's doing its job. Big cutscenes you can't skip are the enemy of pocket play.
A quick tip: before a long trip, open the game once at home to make sure everything is downloaded. Some RPGs grab extra assets on first launch, and you don't want that to happen when you're already offline.
